A sensational sale of the Fabergé collection from the Brooklyn Museum's collection took place at a Russian auction at Sotheby's.
The auction raised £3.3 million, exceeding pre-auction estimates by a factor of three. The total amount raised at the auction of Russian arts and crafts became a record over the last 10 years for this type of auction.
The Brooklyn Museum auctioned 17 lots at Sotheby's - stone-cut Fabergé figurines, floral jewelry, several table clocks and a vase. Customers from 30 countries participated in the auction.
The Brooklyn Museum's auctions aim is to raise $40 million to establish an endowment and receive about $2 million from the fund annually to support the museum's collection.
